Did You Know You Can See a Physical Therapist Without a Referral?

Imagine this scenario for moment: You hurt your back while gardening and after a few days the pain is getting worse rather than better. When you call your primary care physician, they tell you that you cannot be seen for another 3 days and that you should rest. That is three more days of pain and uncertainty. If only you could get in to see a back expert sooner and start feeling better!

The answer is your Doctor of Physical Therapy. In Florida, you can go directly to your physical therapist without having to get a referral from a physician or other medical healthcare provider. This allows you to start treating your symptoms sooner, have less fear of the severity of your pain and have an actionable plan to be your non-injured self again. Whether you are struggling with lingering pain from an old injury or you only hurt yourself yesterday, Direct Access guarantees that you can call our office today to get scheduled and begin treatment as soon as possible.

Physical Therapists routinely assess and treat patients without a physician’s order or recommendation. Direct Access refers to the ability of patients to seek and receive physical therapy services without needing a referral or prescription from a physician or other healthcare provider.

FAQs

Can I continue seeing a therapist even when I feel better?

The short answer is–Absolutely! In fact, at St. Pete Physical Therapy, we actually encourage you to continue seeing your physical therapist even after your symptoms appear to have resolved.

Why? Because often, even though you feel better, you may still not be fully rehabilitated. Furthermore, regular physical therapy can prevent future injury or pain while helping you optimize your overall physical performance and function.

Physical therapy is a comprehensive and ongoing process, not a one-and-done. Even after you’ve completed your plan of care, we recommend you continue working with your trusted physical therapist on your strength and conditioning. The frequency and purpose of these sessions will vary based on individual wants and gym accessibility.

Our therapists will also develop a return-to-activity schedule so you can safely return to your favorite sport or workout program without risking reinjury. A return-to-activity schedule involves gradually increasing the intensity of certain movements until you can operate as usual.

The physical therapists at St. Pete Physical Therapy are here to help you succeed–even after you’ve completed your treatment. To get started, request an appointment today!
