Youth Sports Physical Therapy in St. Pete Built for Young Athletes
Your kid works hard for their sport. A knee injury, shin splints, or a throwing elbow shouldn’t erase that. At St. Pete Physical Therapy, our youth sports physical therapy program is designed specifically for the young, growing athlete — so they can recover safely, stay in the game, and come back stronger.
We treat youth athletes across St. Petersburg and the Tampa Bay area, from middle schoolers in their first competitive season to high school athletes chasing college recruitment.

Why Youth Athletes Need Specialized Sports PT
A 14-year-old’s body is not a small adult. Growing athletes have open growth plates, developing motor patterns, and bones and tendons that respond very differently to stress than fully matured tissue.
That’s why treatment plans that work for adult athletes can actually harm young ones. At St Pete Physical Therapy, every youth sports rehab plan is built around your child’s age, sport, development stage, and goals — not a one-size-fits-all protocol.
Meet Melissa Schorpion — Youth Sports PT Specialist

Dr. Melissa Schorpion (PT, DPT, SCS, OCS, Pediatric Sports Specialist)
When it comes to treating young athletes, experience matters. Melissa Schorpion has dedicated 17 years of her career exclusively to youth sports physical therapy — making her one of the most experienced pediatric sports PTs in the St. Pete area.
Melissa understands what’s at stake for a young athlete. Whether your child is a high school soccer player pushing for a scholarship or a club athlete recovering from their first serious injury, Melissa brings the expertise to treat the injury and the whole athlete behind it. She knows growing bodies, she knows sport demands, and she knows how to get your kid back on the field with confidence.

Common Youth Sports Injuries We Treat
Young athletes get hurt in two main ways:
Acute Injuries happen from a single incident — a bad landing, a collision, or a sudden twist. These include sprains, strains, fractures, and ligament tears like ACL injuries.
Overuse Injuries build up over time from repetitive movement and not enough recovery. These are increasingly common in youth athletes who specialize in one sport year-round. They include:
- Patellar tendonitis (jumper’s knee)
- Achilles tendonitis
- Shin splints
- Little Leaguer’s elbow / golfer’s elbow
- Shoulder pain from overhead sports
- Hip and back pain from running or gymnastics
- Osgood-Schlatter disease (knee pain in growing teens)
If your athlete is dealing with any of these, don’t wait. Early treatment means faster recovery and a lower risk of the injury becoming chronic.
Our Approach to Youth Sports Physical Therapy at St. Pete Physical Therapy
We treat the whole athlete — not just the injury. Every young athlete who comes through our doors gets a personalized evaluation and a treatment plan built around their specific sport, position, and recovery goals.
Our sports PTs use a combination of:
- Manual therapy to restore range of motion and reduce pain
- Targeted strength and conditioning to rebuild the muscles that protect growing joints
- Neuromuscular re-education to retrain movement patterns and prevent re-injury
- Sport-specific movement training to bridge the gap between clinic and competition
- Evidence-based technology including blood flow restriction therapy and advanced running analysis
We also educate your athlete on warm-up and cool-down routines, training loads, and injury prevention strategies — so they stay healthy long after they leave our clinic.
What to Expect From Recovery
Every athlete heals on their own timeline. After the initial evaluation, your child’s sports PT will map out a clear recovery plan with measurable milestones — so both your athlete and your family know exactly where they stand.
Our goal isn’t just to get them pain-free. It’s to get them back to their sport, performing at their best, with the confidence that their body can handle it.
Why St. Pete Families Choose Us
St. Pete Physical Therapy is a sports PT clinic — not a general practice that occasionally sees athletes. Youth and high school sports rehab is core to what we do, and we understand the pressure your athlete feels: the fear of missing the season, the anxiety of falling behind, the hope of earning that scholarship.
With specialists like Melissa Schorpion on staff, we’ve helped athletes across Pinellas County high school programs, club sports, and recreational leagues get back to the sports they love. When your child walks in, they’re treated like the athlete they are.
Frequently Asked Questions About Youth Sports Physical Therapy
How do I know if my child needs physical therapy or just rest?
Rest helps minor soreness — but if your child has pain that’s been going on for more than a week, is getting worse, or is affecting how they move or play, it’s time to see a sports PT. Waiting too long can turn a small overuse problem into a much longer recovery. When in doubt, get it checked early.
Will a youth sports PT treat my child differently than an adult athlete?
Absolutely — and that’s the point. Young athletes have open growth plates, developing bones, and movement patterns that are still maturing. A treatment plan designed for a 35-year-old can actually do more harm than good for a 14-year-old. Our team, including Melissa Schorpion with 17 years of youth sports PT experience, builds every plan specifically for growing athletes.
How long will my child’s recovery take?
It depends on the injury, how long it’s been going on, and how consistently your athlete attends sessions. Acute injuries like sprains can resolve in a few weeks with the right treatment. Overuse injuries or post-surgical recoveries take longer — sometimes 3 to 6 months or more. Your child’s PT will give you a realistic timeline after the first evaluation.
Can my child see a physical therapist without a doctor’s referral?
Yes. Florida has direct access laws, which means your child can start physical therapy at St Pete PT without needing a referral first. This gets them into treatment faster — which often means a faster recovery. If a referral is required by your insurance, we’ll help guide you through that process.
What sports injuries are most common in high school athletes?
The most common injuries we see in teen and high school athletes are ACL tears, patellar tendonitis, Achilles tendonitis, shin splints, shoulder overuse injuries (especially in throwing and overhead sports), and ankle sprains. Many of these are preventable with the right training approach — something we also help with through our sports injury prevention program.
